Which Way Should Your Casement Windows Open?

Casement window installation seems like a fairly straightforward project, but you’ll soon find that it requires so many decisions. And these aren’t limited to your choice of framing material, window glass or trim color either. You should, for example, decide which way your casement windows will open. Renewal by Andersen® of Montana, a trusted window installation expert in the area, shares some tips.

  • Take into account your dominant hand. Modern casement windows usually operate via a crank that allows the sash to open or close in one direction. The crank may be placed on the left hand or right hand side. You can use either hand to operate the window, but you can make it easier on yourself by positioning the crank according to your dominant hand. If you’re right-handed, for instance, you should go for casements with a right side crank, which allows the crank to open to the right.
  • Consider the ventilation. If you want to increase your home’s access to natural ventilation, you can position a left-handed casement and a right-handed casement on opposite sides of the room. This not only helps maximize the cooling breezes entering your home but also allows for smoother, continuous airflow as the cool air coming inside one window is efficiently channeled out through the other. For the best results, keep the sashes cranked at a 45-degree angle.
  • Don’t overlook aesthetics. You’ll want to position the hinged side of your casements close to the center of the room. That way, the sash will open toward the middle, which makes their design more visually appealing. If you’re pairing casement windows together, make sure they’re opening in opposite directions. This allows the units to open like double doors. Aside from looking better design-wise, the wide opening they create in the middle is useful for letting in fresh, cool air.
