Window Cleaning Checklist: Fall Edition

Fall is a good time to think about cleaning projects, especially in preparation for winter. One of the tasks that you should get done before the coldest season arrives is window cleaning. Whether you have sliding windows or double-hung windows, this basic guide to window cleaning should give you a general idea of what needs to be covered.

Prepare Your Cleaning Supplies

Ensure that your cleaning supplies are ready prior to starting the task. Microfiber cloths, sponge, soft bristle brush, residue-free glass cleaner, bucket and soapy water, and vacuum with extension hose should be in your arsenal.

Check Your Windows for Leaks

Look for signs of leaks. If the seals are worn out, these can cause significant heat loss during the colder months. You can have a professional inspect your windows to know if window replacement is necessary, especially if your windows are old.

Clean Your Blinds and Draperies

Get rid of the dust on your blinds and clean draperies according to their care instructions. It would also be a good time to switch from lighter window coverings to insulated ones.

Clean the Window Screens, Window Sills and Tracks and Storm Windows

Remove the window screens so that you can clean them properly. You can use a garden hose to make the job easier. Just make sure to dry the screens completely before installing them again, and look out for small tears that may need repair. Don’t forget to give your window sills and tracks a good scrub too. If you have storm windows, it’s time to clean and insert them.

Clean the Glass

Use a glass cleaner and microfiber cloth to wipe the window glass inside and out. Do this in an up and down motion on one side and then a side-to-side motion on the other. This technique will make it easier for you to see any missed spots.
