NFRC Ratings: What You Need to Know

Energy-efficient windows can help reduce your heating and cooling costs as well as your environmental impact. With these windows, you can also ensure your home stays efficient all-year-round. When getting new units, you must pay attention to ratings and labels. The National Fenestration Rating Council label lets you compare the energy efficiency of windows, doors and skylights.

Find out what you need to know about NFRC ratings from a trusted window company.

What Makes the NFRC Rating Different from ENERGY STAR® Label?

NFRC independently tests, certifies and labels products to help consumers choose the best windows for their needs. It allows you to compare products by giving a breakdown of their energy performance. On the other hand, the ENERGY STAR® indicates whether a product is energy-efficient or not.

Energy Performance Categories

U-Factor – It refers to how well a unit can prevent heat from escaping your home. Windows with lower U-factor do better at keeping heated air inside. To prevent conditioned air from leaking, make sure to have your new units installed by an experienced window contractor.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) – SHGC measures how well windows can withstand unwanted heat gain. It can help you determine which products can help cool your home better in the warmer months. The lower a window’s SHGC is, the better it can keep heat from entering your home.

Visible Transmittance – This rating pertains to the amount of visible light that passes through a window’s glass. To reduce your dependence on artificial light and save money on energy costs, look for windows with higher visible transmittance.

Air Leakage – It measures how much air will penetrate a room through a window. Units with a lower air leakage rating can help minimize drafts in your home.
