The Top 4 Sliding Door Myths That You Shouldn’t Believe

Patio doors are a great asset to have for your home. After all, not only can they help your home’s energy efficiency capabilities but they can also enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of your property and increase its value. Despite their popularity, however, there are still a few myths that plague sliding doors and as a homeowner, it’s best you know what these myths are.

In this post, Renewal by Andersen® – Montana reveals the four myths often associated with sliding doors and the truth behind them.

  1. Hard to Slide – The myth that patio doors are difficult to slide does have some grain of truth to it as the older variants of the door simply slide the bottom gasket of the door through the track, which can be difficult if the door is too big and heavy. However, modern patio doors are now designed to be top-hung, which lifts the panels of the floor and are fitted with precision rollers, allowing you to operate the door more smoothly than ever.

  1. Air Tight – Contrary to popular belief, sliding doors aren’t actually air tight and can let some air in and out of your home. This is because it’s impossible to make a door completely airtight thanks to the minimum standards set by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association. These standards also allows your sliding doors to be as energy efficient as possible.

  1. Leaks Water – Again, this notion actually has some grain of truth to it as just like any opening in your home, sliding doors can leak provided there’s enough wind and rain. This is because sliding doors are designed to withstand only a certain level of protection from the environment. However, you should also keep in mind that today’s sliding doors are designed to seal flat against the floor so long as all components are properly matched to one another. This allows them to resist any leakage when it rains.

  1. Ugly – This notion can be attributed to older sliding doors that were bigger and bulkier. Now, sliding doors have sleek, narrow sightlines and the frames around the glass are getting smaller and smaller, increasing the view. Apart from that, you also have a wide range of options when it comes to frame material, allowing homeowners such as yourself to have a say on what your sliding door will look like.
